Start with the suitcase interior
Choose luggage lining by its role in the interior, the approved fabric specification and a sewn sample. A shell liner, divider panel and internal pocket can have different requirements. Show where the fabric sits, which face will be visible and how it connects to the rest of the interior.
For a repeat order, send a labelled swatch of the approved material. For a new design, describe the desired handle, surface appearance and coverage. Photographs help explain the design, but a physical reference is better for comparing feel and checking both sides of a fabric.
Turn a fabric name into a specification
Oxford, taffeta, pongee and satin are useful starting points for a discussion. They are not complete purchase specifications. CottonWorks describes Oxford as a basket-weave variation and five-harness satin as a repeat using five warp and five filling yarns. Neither description sets the fibre composition or finished weight.
Our material pages include Oxford Fabric, Chunqiuding Fabric, Polyester Taffeta, Polyester Pongee, Nylon Taffeta, Satin Fabric and 5-Harness Satin. When requesting Chunqiuding, retain the Chinese name 春秋丁 and send a swatch or existing item reference so the construction can be agreed.
- Identify the fibre composition and warp / weft yarn specification.
- Record the weave or construction, fabric weight and usable width.
- Specify the colour reference, visible face and any required finish.
Compare samples in the intended application
Place candidate swatches against the same shell, backing or divider material. Compare how much of the background shows through, how the fabric folds around a corner and how the chosen colour looks under the same lighting. Label every sample so comments can be traced to the correct construction.
If the interior uses a printed logo, mark its direction and repeat. A print that looks correct on a flat swatch may face the wrong way after panels are assembled. Decide the required orientation before making the cutting pattern.
| Decision | What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Candidate fabrics over the same shell or backing | Visible face, color and approved construction |
| Sewing | The same zipper junction and corner seam | Fabric direction, seam details and sample ID |
| Appearance | Flat fabric and the installed interior | Print orientation, folds and approved viewing conditions |
Check the seam as well as the cloth
Ask for a sewn trial using the intended seam, thread and attached components. Coats identifies fabric structure, seam construction, thread / needle size and feeding as factors in seam puckering. Reviewing the assembled sample therefore gives information that a loose swatch cannot provide.
List any required abrasion, tear, colourfastness or other performance assessment in the enquiry. Agree the test method and acceptance criteria for the selected construction rather than assuming that a fabric name establishes a performance level.
Prepare a brief that can be quoted
Send the reference material, intended application, colour or artwork, required quantity and preferred supply format. State whether you need rolls, cut panels or sewn liners. For cut or sewn work, include the pattern or internal measurements and identify the suitcase model and size. Keep the approved sample reference with the final specification.
